Following an insurance claim made in relation to hives that were stolen last January, and discussed amongst some beekeepers at the NSWAA Conference in Ballina, it has come to light that about two years ago, insurance companies decided to no longer include the bees in their insurance cover for beehives. This decision apparently followed a number of claims on dead bees from pesticide poisonings when the hives were placed near Canola and Cotton – the insurance companies decided that the bees themselves were too high a risk, and simply dropped them from the cover. Only the physical components of the beehive are covered.
