Long View Choices Amidst the Honey Fraud Landscape

Food fraud is big business. “According to Pricewaterhouse-Coopers, food fraud is estimated to be worth $52 billion globally each year. The illegal trade in firearms is worth an estimated $8.5 billion a year and heroin $30 billion. No wonder food fraud is now among the high rollers of crime.1” This is a sobering fact for a fourth-generation beekeeper situated in Beechworth, Victoria, Australia. Knowing that honey is consistently in the Top 10 foods most likely to be adulterated, it’s little wonder that Australia’s “Beechworth Honey” are amongst a minority of honey packers and traders who choose NOT to be lured by low priced honey from known adulteration countries.
